PREPPING FOR THE MISSION

Saturday night, eleven thirty.

Hawk was the first to arrive at ALPHA. He drove around back, parked the SUV near the door, and made his way inside. The place was quiet. He dropped his computer bag on the conference table and paired his laptop so he could project the images on the drop-down screen. Then, he pulled up the blueprint of the building, along with photos of the men they were taking out.

He walked into the supply room, pulled six comms from the shelf and made his way back to the conference room. Normally chill, he was on edge. Not about the mission. About Addison. He hadn’t been able to shake her from his thoughts all day.

Despite the run, the weight lifting, and the attempt to do a mindful meditation, he fucking hated that she’d stormed out on him. He was concerned the tension would prevent them from working as a team. If anyone detected the friction between them, it might affect the outcome. He’d never been in this situation before, but he had to move past it… for now.

He turned his attention to the screen and studied the faces of the criminals. There was added pressure when he was leading a team and flying the helo. Plus, he had to keep an eye out for Tommy.

Earlier in the day, Addison had texted him. “Liv and Jericho are managing the club for us tonight.”

“Thanks for taking care of that,” he’d replied. “I’m getting to HQ early.”

She never responded to that text.

The mission, as far as missions went, was straightforward. Fly to the location, surprise the fugitives, eliminate them, fly back.

Addison walked in. The divot between her eyebrows was deeper than usual.

“Hey, babe,” he said. “How you doing?”

“I’m okay.” She set her computer bag on the table.

Like he expected, she’d worn a black shirt, black pants, and her long, black duster. She hadn’t pulled her hair out of the way and she didn’t have on any camouflage paint yet. He’d left his team enough time to get mission-ready.

The old Addison would have asked him about his day. She would have told him something about hers. Not tonight, though. She dropped into a chair, turned her attention toward the images he’d projected on the screen.

“I want to go back to being friends,” she murmured.

A stabbing pain shot through him. He fucking hated that she wouldn’t even look at him. “You sure?”

“Yup. I made a mistake.” Her ice-cold tone sliced through him.

He wanted to push back, but not here, not now.

The tension rolling off her was brutal. When she turned her gaze on him, daggers shot from her eyes. He needed their heads in the game, so he’d play this chill. If he incited her, he’d have to pull her from the mission and possibly stand down himself. Scrubbing a mission because two Operatives can’t manage through their conflict would never fly. Operatives were expected to bring their A-game.

No A-game? No mission. No exceptions.

“I’ll do whatever you want,” he lied.

“Thank you,” she said as Barry strolled into the room.
